Top 14 Neighborhood Amenities in Decatur, GA

Decatur is a lovely in-town suburb of Atlanta and part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. Decatur is fairly green, being home to numerous parks with plenty of recreational activities, some shopping centers, a library, and other interesting venues. This guide will take you to some of the nicest sites in the area.

Bradley Observatory

The Bradley Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by Agnes Scott College. The observatory's largest telescope, the Beck Telescope, is a vintage 30 inch (750 mm) Cassegrain reflector built in 1930. The telescope was owned and operated by an amateur astronomer, Mr. Gibson. Agnes Scott purchased it in 1947 for about $15,000. Until 1972 the Beck telescope was the largest in the Southeast United States.

The observatory was built in order to house the Beck telescope and was dedicated in 1950. It also houses faculty offices and a planetarium. The observatory is a contributing structure within the National Register South Candler Street-Agnes Scott College Historic District.

McCain Library

McCain Library is part of the Agnes Scott College, and its primary purpose is to offer the school's students, faculty and staff an easy access to information. The library offers reading rooms, WiFi and a computer lab.

Decatur Recreation Department

Decatur Recreation Department originally opened in 1958 and was completely renovated and modernized in 2010-2011. The new and improved center offers a variety of recreational activities, such as: crafts, fitness, dance, youth activities, and more.

North Dekalb Mall

North Dekalb Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Decatur that opened in 1965. Currently the center comprises more than eighty-five stores on one level. Anchor stores include Burlington Coat Factory, Macy's, Payless Home Furnishings, Marshalls, and Ross Dress For Less; the mall also features a food court and multiplex movie theater.

Leapin Lizards Inflatable Fun & Party Center

Leapin’ Lizards is an indoors play and party center. The center provides several indoor play areas with lots of bouncy houses, and several party rooms. Its a great place to host a child's birthday party, the staff takes care of all details involved, including catering and clean up, or you can bring your own food and drinks and leave just the cleaning to the staff.

Adair Park

Adair Park is a small, four-acre park located next to the historic Mary Gay and Swanton House. The park features picnic tables, playground area and dog park.

Ebster Park

Ebster Park is a five-acre neighborhood park. It offers a pool house and swimming pool, a pavilion with tables and grills, basketball courts, playground area, and a large multipurpose field. The field is primarily used by the Decatur Youth Sports and the Renfroe Middle School for soccer and lacrosse.

Glenlake Park

Glenlake Park is a 17-acre park offering a multitude of amenities, such as: picnic tables, grills, swimming pool and pool house, picnic pavilion, five tennis courts, two baseball fields, basketball/volleyball court, playground, and an enclosed dog park.

Hidden Cove Park

Hidden Cove Park is a small, three-acre park located right behind the former Westchester Elementary. The park may be small, but it is beautifully preserved and offers a perfect place for an afternoon walk.

Mead Road Park

Mead Road Park is a tiny park located right next to Oakhurst Elementary. The park is just .75 acres in size, but does offer an open grassy area, multiple playground structures, basketball court, and picnic tables.

McKoy Park

McKoy Park is a nine-acre neighborhood park and home to a 330-foot baseball field, basketball court, a picnic pavilion and picnic tables, concession building, playground area, and a skate park.

Oakhurst Park

Oakhurst Park is a medium size, eight-acre park. The park features a multitude of amenities, like picnic pavilion, concession building, two softball fields, two lighted tennis courts, basketball court, and playground area. Oakhurst is home to Agnes Scott College and Decatur High School women's softball, as well as Decatur Youth Sports baseball and girls softball.

Scott Park

Scott Park is a small, four acre park, located just behind the Decatur Recreation Center. The park may be small, but it is surrounded by beautiful gardens and is home to two lighted tennis courts, kids playground, and picnic spots.
