It is characterized by coastal beaches, cliffs, flat-topped coastal areas, steep mesa bluffs and rolling hills. The city was incorporated in 1986, gathering the communities of New Encinitas, Old Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivenhain and Leucadia. Downtown 101 is an over 100 years old coastal shopping district featuring historic architecture, quaint shops, sidewalk cafes, and restaurants framed by beautiful flower baskets. Downtown Encinitas Merchants Association and the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce are a good place to find information about business in the city. The beaches in Encinitas are outstanding. There are many stretches of beach located between Cardiff-by-the-Sea and La Costa. Surfing here is unbeatable and there are many surf contests held throughout the year. The San Elijo Lagoon Reserve is the largest coastal wetland in the county of San Diego and is home to approximately 300 different bird species throughout the year. The natural beauty of the communities, together with temperatures between 40 and 85 degrees year-round make Encinitas a wonderful place to live.

Moonlight State Beach

Moonlight State Beach is a wide, sandy beach that offers swimming, surfing and fishing. The facilities here include volleyball and tennis courts, recreational equipment rentals and a snack bar. Moonlight State Beach is located at the end of Encinitas Boulevard. This is where the shore drops down nearer to sea level, and is one of the easiest beaches to find and use in Encinitas. With its large sandy area this beach is a popular place for families and vacationers who want to spend the entire day at the beach.

Encinitas Ranch Golf Course

Encinitas Ranch, located on a magnificent sweep of bluffs, is one of the few San Diego golf courses where players enjoy ocean views from nearly every hole. Its coastal setting preserves this golf course’s record of never posting a frost delay. Self Realization Fellowship

Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) is a worldwide spiritual organization founded by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1920 and legally incorporated as a non-profit religious organization in 1935, to serve as Yogananda’s instrument for the preservation and worldwide dissemination of his writings and teachings, including Kriya Yoga. Self-Realization Fellowship continues to disseminate Paramahansa Yogananda's teachings following his stated Aims and Ideals. SRF publishes Yogananda teachings of home-study lessons, writings including Autobiography of a Yogi, lectures, and recorded talks; oversees temples, retreats, meditation centers, and monastic communities bearing the name Self-Realization Order. It also coordinates the Worldwide Prayer Circle, which it describes as a network of groups and individuals who pray for those in need of physical, mental, or spiritual aid, and who also pray for world peace and harmony. After his return from India in 1936, Paramahansa Yogananda took up residence at the SRF hermitage in Encinitas, California which was a surprise gift from his disciple Rajarsi Janakananda. It was while at this hermitage that Yogananda wrote his famous Autobiography of a Yogi and other writings, plus creating an "enduring foundation for the spiritual and humanitarian work of the Self Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India. This property now includes an ashram and a retreat center. A main temple and an overflow temple are nearby on Second St.

Cardiff State Beach

Cardiff State Beach is a nice and clean beach located on the San Diego Coast, which has been called the Riviera of the West. Cardiff State Beach is a gently sloping sandy beach with warm water. The site offers swimming, surfing and beachcombing. This beach allows dogs, so some of the visitors come here with their four-legged friends.

Cardiff Seaside Market is a convenient market that has been a leader in offering better quality products and great service since 1985. The market is family-owned and operated, and offers a great variety of cheeses, salads, meats and ready to go unique dishes, as well as sandwiches. Encinitas Station

Encinitas is a passenger rail station serving the city of Encinitas, California on North County Transit District's COASTER commuter rail route. In addition to the COASTER service, 3 northbound and 3 southbound Pacific Surfliner trains also serve this station 6 times daily starting from October 7, 2013. This station is served by 4 scheduled Breeze bus routes, FLEX Route 374, and LIFT paratransit for those with disabilities. This station is also within walking distance to the Downtown Encinitas.

Hansen Surfboards

Hansen Surfboards was founded in 1961 on Oahu's North Shore. In 1962 the shop moved to Cardiff-by-the-Sea CA. Here the business began to grow at a fast pace. By the mid-60's Hansen Surfboards was shipping surfboards to many places around the world. In the early 70's, Hansen's became a retail business and quickly was one of the most popular and well-known surf shops in Southern California. The shop in Encinitas is the largest surf shop in the county. The 16,000 square feet of retail space are filled with everything that customers of all ages may need. They sell apparel, beach accessories, surf gear, snow gear, skate gear and even home décor!

Leucadia Farmers Market

The Leucadia Farmers Market is a market consisting 75+ vendors. The market was founded in 2005 and the proceeds from it go to support the Paul Ecke Central School P.T.A. and the Leucadia Main Street Association. The market offers various foods and fresh produce. The market is quite crowded at times and parking may be problematic, but if you don't mind parking elsewhere and walking to the market there should be no problem.

Solterra Winery & Kitchen

Solterra Winery is located a few blocks from the beach. Here the climate is ideal for wine storage. Their wines are made from locally sourced grapes as well as grapes from all over California and Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico. They have a variety of red, white, rose, port, and late harvest wines. Their wines have garnered Golds and Best of Class at top competitions in California. The foods they serve with their wines are predominantly rustic Mediterranean tapas. They source most of the ingredients for their foods locally. Besides wines they also serve San Diego produced beers.
