Low Country Beauty in Old Ortega

Ortega is a neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, US. It is located south of downtown Jacksonville on a peninsula off the western bank of the St. Johns River. It is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Jacksonville, and is the location of many historic homes and buildings. Ortega has a few different sections with different characteristics. There is the riverfront, with multimillion dollar mansions. Ortega Point has old wood frame and Tudor homes surrounding Bettes Park. The historic district has modest wood frame homes dating back to the early 1900s. There is an extensive park system and many of the local residents set up trusts to help maintain and landscape the parks.

Ortega River Homes

Ortega River runs to the St Johns river. Homes along the river are a mixture of new and old with beautiful live oaks and Spanish moss. The old drawbridge that takes you into Ortega provides beautiful views of both river and homes on the river bank. A beautiful island to live and play.

Ortega Point

Ortega Point is at the tip of old Ortega and features beautiful homes on and across from the river. Enjoy boat trips from your dock. The Ortega drawbridge completes the lowcountry atmosphere as you enter the island and enjoy the neighborhood atmosphere village square and beautiful parks.

Florida Yacht Club

Florida Yacht Club is located in the Ortega area of Jacksonville. It is the oldest social club in Jacksonville, and is the fourth oldest surviving yacht club in the U.S. It was founded in downtown Jacksonville in 1877, and moved to its present location in the Ortega neighborhood in 1928. The Yacht Club was at first organized for the purpose of promoting yachting and social enjoyment. Whether you are a tennis player, boater, sailor, family person or established professional Florida Yacht Club has something for you.

Ortega River Bridge

The Ortega River Bridge, also known as the Old Ortega Bridge is a local historical landmark. The current bridge was built in 1927 and opened to the traffic the same year. This bridge replaced the earlier original wooden bridge that was completed in 1908. The bridge is located at the mouth of the Ortega overlooking Jacksonville's skyline. Due to the parks at the north end of the bridge it is a good place to relax and enjoy a sunny day by the river.

Simply Sara's

Simply Sara's has a delicious menu of all homemade southern goodies. Their cakes and cookies are phenomenal. Family-owned and operated and located in the village in Old Ortega. They are open for lunch and dinner Tuesday-Saturday. Don't miss this!

Stockton Park

Stockton Park is located along the St. Johns River in southwest Jacksonville. At first the park was named Ortega Park and was renamed for John N. C. Stockton (1857-1922), president of the Ortega Company. A major improvement project was undertaken in 2004-2005 and the redesigned park opened in July 2005.

Carter's Pharmacy

Carter's Pharmacy has been around in Ortega Village since 1955. The pharmacy's owner is Bill Carter, a former councilman. This landmark pharmacy is conveniently located for both Ortega and surrounding neighborhoods residents.

Frazier Jewelers

A diamond located in Old Ortega next to Carter's Pharmacy. Beautiful jewelry of all types. Also repairs. Convenient to the shops in the village including Simply Sara's and several hair salons.

Cortez Park

Cortez Park is located in the Ortega neighborhood in southwest Jacksonville. Cortez Park is one of four circular parks that were created along Park Avenue (now Baltic Street). The four parks were named after New World explorers - Cortez Park is named for Hernando Cortez, the Spanish conqueror of Mexico.

St Mark's Episcopal School

St. Mark's Episcopal Day School is a parish school in Jacksonville. The school is dedicated to excellence in education in a Christian environment. It was founded in 1970 and was originally a non-profit Christian school. Nowadays the strong developmental curriculum of the school provides a firm foundation for the studies to come while meeting the needs of the ever-changing society.
