Top 24 Neighborhood Amenities in East Bayside, Portland, ME

East Bayside is one of the most diverse and quickly growing neighborhoods in Portland, Maine. It was the first that developed a street network in the early 19th century. By the 1820s the area was Portland’s second seaport via the Back Cove’s ship channel. In 1840 the Union Railroad ran along the then shoreline of Back Cove, following approximately where Oxford Street is today. This guide features the top 24 sites in East Bayside.

Maine Outdoor Adventure Club

Maine Outdoor Adventure Club is an all-volunteer member organization. They organize and lead various trips and outdoor activities for all levels starting from beginner to expert. The activities range from relaxing and peaceful to exciting and challenging. The Club organizes events in every season and for all ages. Some of the activities it organizes are winter camping, ice/rock climbing, strenuous hiking, mountain biking, sailing and walking. It is not required to be a member to participate in an activity organized by the Club, anyone can try an activity and if they like it they can join the Club.

Bunker Brewing Co.

Bunker Brewing Co. is a small artisan brewery that creates some of the best beers in the area. They create various brews from experimental to traditional, and also seasonal brews. If you go there and find it hard to choose one type of beer, they serve samples that will help you choose what you like best. They do not have much of indoor seating, but there is a nice patio instead with plenty of seating space. The atmosphere is welcoming and the staff is friendly, what more could you need?

The Snug is a great Irish pub to go have a drink and spend a nice evening. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy, they have a nice selection of beers, or if you'd like something stronger they have a full bar. The pub is dog friendly so you need not worry about having to leave your four-legged friend outside.

Carlson & Turner Antiquarian Books

Carlson & Turner Antiquarian Books is a store dealing in old and used books. The store has been in business since the 1970's and is housed in an old Victorian era building. The store has more than 40,000 books on its shelves. There are books of various topics including Scholarly books in various fields, Civil War, History, Travel, Maine related and several others. If you like old books this store is the place to go to! They do not limit themselves to what they have on the shelves, if you need a certain book just tell them and they will try an find it for you.

Urban Farm Fermentory

Urban Farm Fermentory is an experimental fermentation center that offers a variety of ciders and fermented teas (kombucha). They source most of their ingredients locally and produce some of the best beverages around. They have a tasting room were you can sample some of their products. Here it is possible to experiment with blending various types of cider, kombucha and mead, thus creating your own custom beverage. They also offer tours of their facility and explain how their beverages are made. A visit to the Urban Farm Fermentory is an interesting experience that should not be missed in the neighborhood.

Tandem Coffee Roasters

Tandem Coffee Roasters offers various types of coffee to its customers. Tandem Coffee Roaster is located in a small brick building and is quite a nice place. The coffee here is good and they also serve pastries to go with your coffee. The prices are a bit on the high side, but it is totally worth it.

Rising Tide Brewing Company, LLC

Rising Tide Brewing Company is a family-owned brewery specialized in artisan, hand-crafted ales brewed in small batches. The brewery offers free tours of its premises showing their brewing process. They have a small tasting room where you can try some of their beers. They often have food trucks where you can get something to eat so that you do not drink on an empty stomach. Their beers are all good, and customers usually have a hard time picking a favorite among them! If you would like to taste some great beer this is the place to go to.

Tu Casa

Tu Casa is a restaurant serving authentic Salvadoran food. The restaurant itself may not look like much, however the food it offers is absolutely delicious. They have an extensive menu with Salvadoran dishes you can choose from. It is totally worth to pay them a visit, but make sure you have plenty of time for it and do not expect a very quick service; they always prepare the food fresh, so you will have to wait just the right amount of time for it to be cooked.

Silly's Restaurant

Silly's Restaurant is a popular place that offers great food in a silly and funny environment. The menu is quite extensive and can accommodate most dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and lactose free. The food is always great, it comes in ample portions and everything is homemade. The servers are friendly and helpful.

Otto is one of the best pizza places in Portland. Their pizzas come in a great variety all very good, and there is even a build your own option. They also offer some other specialties like meatballs, and they can accommodate vegans and vegetarians. They have a nice wine list and several types of beer. Their food is good and the prices are reasonable, service is quick and the staff is friendly and helpful. This is by far one of the best options to get some delicious pizza while in the neighborhood.

Maine Mead Works

Maine Mead Works has the goal to reintroduce people to one of the oldest fermented beverages in the world – mead. To produce their beverages they use locally sourced honey, pure water and their own yeast strain. They have several varieties of mead all very nice and they offer reasonably priced tastings. They also offer tours of their facility where you have the opportunity to see the process of producing mead. They do not offer food at Maine Mead Works so it would be a good idea to get something to eat before heading here, or you may end up more than a little tipsy.

Shipyard Brewery

Shipyard Brewery produces a variety of handcrafted beers that are quite popular with the locals. At every hour, the brewery offers a video tour of the facility, a visit to the bottling area and free tasting. You are offered to taste various kinds of their beers, which is a nice way of getting to know their products and also helps if you decide what beer you want to take with you. They also have a gift shop selling various items and of course beer. They offer a full tour around the brewery on Tuesdays, but you have to book in advance.

Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods Market is specializing in organic food and it only sells products that meet its self-created quality standards for being "natural", which the store defines as: minimally processed foods that are free of hydrogenated fats as well as artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, preservatives, and many others as listed on their online "Unacceptable Food Ingredients" list. The company also sells many USDA-certified organic foods and products that aim to be environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible. They also have a selection of products for those with special dietary requirements such as intolerance to gluten and lactose, products for vegetarians and vegans etc. Whatever you may need you can be sure to find it all here.

PortFiber is a shop specialized in fiber arts, teaching classes in weaving, wheel spinning, drop spindle spinning, needle felting, nuno and wet felting, and dyeing. They sell a great variety of hand-dyed, commercially dyed, and undyed fiber for spinning and felting, and also plenty of yarns for weaving. They also sell spinning wheels and looms, which can also be rented out. The customer service is very good, they are friendly and helpful, and also knowledgeable about everything related to yarns and fibers.

PhoPa Gallery

PhoPa Gallery became a reality through the collaboration of photographer Jon Edwards, independent curator Bruce Brown and Maine Media Workshops + College. PhoPa Gallery showcases photographs and works on paper from Maine artists and also the works of the Maine Media Workshops + College students and alumni. Etz Chaim Synagogue / Maine Jewish Museum

The Maine Jewish Museum is located in the Etz Chaim Synagogue, which is one of the oldest synagogues still in operation in the state of Maine. The museum's mission is to honor the contribution of the Jewish immigrants to the American experience. The exhibitions change regularly and show various aspects of Jewish history and culture in Maine and in general.

World Gym is a full service fitness facility equipped with lots of machines for training, thousands of pounds of strength equipment, nice locker rooms and sauna. You can train individually or take group classes - the schedule is quite accommodating. The staff is friendly and motivating and the monthly rate is quite low.

St Paul's Parish

St. Paul's Parish was established in 1763 as the first non-Puritan church in the Portland area. During the Revolutionary War the church building was lost in the attack of the British forces. A second church was destroyed in the Great Portland Fire of 1866. The nowadays church was built in 1867 in a 12th century Gothic design. The church services are on Sunday mornings and anyone who wishes is welcome to attend. You can even join the community for coffee after the mass.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is an historic cathedral on Cumberland Avenue and Congress Streets. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. Construction began in 1866 under the supervision of New York architect Patrick Keely. After being devastated by fire, the church was finally completed on September 8, 1869. The Cathedral was restored in 1921, 1969, and 2000. In 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The interior of the neo-Gothic Cathedral is 186 feet by 70 feet. The ceiling rises 70 feet, and the main aisle is 150 feet long; it holds almost 1000 worshipers. The tallest of the Cathedral’s three steeples is, at 204 feet, the tallest structure in the city of Portland.

Aikido of Maine offers Aikido classes to adults and children alike. The dojo is spacious and provides a good training environment. Aikido of Maine offers various programs with classes for different ages and categories of difficulty. Aikido is a noncompetitive Japanese martial art that is often referred to as “The Art of Peace” that helps improve the emotional and physical wellbeing. Classes are available six days per week and the schedule is flexible so it can fit anyone's lifestyle.
