Top 19 Neighborhood Amenities of Nob Hill, Albuquerque, NM

Nob Hill is a neighborhood consisting of a commercial district along Central Avenue (former U.S. Route 66) and the surrounding residential areas. Located just east of the University of New Mexico, the neighborhood was developed between about 1925 and 1950 and has since become a popular tourist and shopping destination. Nob Hill is home to an eclectic mix of shops, galleries, bars, and restaurants, many of which are locally owned. There are also some chain stores, such as Urban Outfitters, Buffalo Exchange, and Starbucks. This guide will show you around the most prominent sites in the neighborhood.

Central Avenue

Central Avenue is a major east-west street in Albuquerque, which historically served as the city's main thoroughfare and principal axis of development. Central Avenue was part of U.S. Route 66 from 1937 until the highway's decommissioning in 1985 and also forms one axis of Albuquerque's house numbering system. Central has a large number of surviving Route 66-era commercial buildings as well as earlier buildings downtown and in Old Town. Central Avenue has a large concentration of shops, restaurants and other interesting places. It is literally the heart of the neighborhood.

Nob Hill Business Center

Nob Hill Business Center is a historic shopping center located in the Nob Hill neighborhood of Albuquerque. Built in 1946–7, it was the first modern suburban shopping center in New Mexico, and its construction marked a shift away from pedestrian-oriented development in Albuquerque in favor of decentralized, auto-oriented sprawl. Located on Central Avenue (former U.S. Route 66) at Carlisle Boulevard, the building is the focal point of the Nob Hill district. The shopping center turned out to be a major success and served as a model for future commercial development in Albuquerque.

Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters in Nob Hill is located at 3225 Central Ave NE. Its inventory primarily consists of clothing, footwear, and housewares, which largely draw from bohemian, hipster, ironically humorous, kitschy, retro, and vintage styles. The company has additionally collaborated with designers and luxury brands on several occasions.

Elsa Ross

Elsa Ross is a shop dealing in women's clothing located right in the heart of Nob Hill. As it opened in 1989 it was a shoe store and later added several womenswear lines which proved to be a success. It is now selling upmarket lines from 40 – 50 designers per season. The shop has a great customer service and they will be more than happy to help you find something for you. They have been getting awards for their lines and service from Albuquerque The Magazine every year, so they are really worth checking out.

El Paso Import Co

El Paso Import Co was founded in 1985. It deals in custom-crafted and imported furnishings. The company works with artisans from several countries like Mexico, India, Indonesia, Romania, Ghana, and Pakistan. All their furniture is 100% solid natural wood, and handmade using traditional carpentry techniques. They never carry any products made from engineered woods.

Nob Hill La Montañita Co-op Food Market

La Montañita is a community-owned consumer cooperative that offers fresh organic local produce. The cooperative was created in 1976 and has been around ever since. It sells different kinds of organic meats, cheeses and other natural and organic groceries, fresh deli foods, natural body care, vitamins and supplements. The products the food market sells come from 400 local producers.

Guild Cinema

Guild cinema is the only independent movie theater in Albuquerque. It shows all kinds of movies for moviegoers of all tastes. Some of the foreign or independent movies shown at the Guild are never shown at other theaters. The theater is home for many movie festivals and is also available for rent for parties, special events or even for private screenings.

Immanuel Presbyterian Church

Immanuel Presbyterian Church is a historic church in Albuquerque. The church has been for over sixty years a place of fellowship, outreach, service, and a place of Biblical study. The church is currently experiencing a renewal and refocusing as it embraces the challenges and opportunities of a new century. The church always welcomes and accepts new people. The church's building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Monte Vista Christian Church

Monte Vista Christian Church is an open congregation that has as its goal to overcome barriers between people such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, education and many others. The congregation encourages diversity and freedom of scriptural interpretation. It regularly organizes events so that people could get to know each other. They welcome all and everyone who wants to join the congregation.

Ryde Shack

Ryde Shack is a fitness studio that accepts people of all fitness levels and provides a program of energetic workout meant to invigorate the mind, body and spirit. Ryde Shack offers full body strength training with Ryder bikes, TRX, yoga and other. The studio is fully equipped with everything necessary for the training and for freshening up after it.

Matrix Fine Art

Matrix Fine Art was established in 2007 by Regine Held. The gallery focuses on contemporary art and shows New Mexico's artistic diversity. Matrix Fine Art showcases paintings, photography and ceramic ranging from abstract to figurative and from landscapes to still lifes. The gallery puts for display several exhibitions a year.

Mariposa Gallery

Mariposa Gallery is one of the oldest contemporary art galleries in the country. It has been showcasing contemporary art, jewelry and ceramics since 1974. They always have a wonderful collection of art that is also available for purchase. Most of the items on display come from local artists.

Stranger Factory

Stranger Factory is a unique gallery dedicated to bringing a new style of art to the area. The gallery specializes in post modern and pop surrealist art. Stranger Factory is a half gallery and half gift shop that offers original artwork, limited edition prints, art volumes, sculptural editions as well as various gifts, novelties, designer toys and curious objects. Their exhibitions rotate on a monthly basis so they have something new to show each month.

Christian Science Reading Room

The Christian Science Reading Room & Bookstore offers books, magazines, CDs, Bibles and Bible study aids, children's items and others. The Reading Room is open for everyone not just the Christian Scientists. This is not only a place to read or buy books, it is also a place for discussions related to God and spiritual nature.

Astro-Zombies

Astro-Zombies is a toy and comic bookstore that has a wide range of comic books, toys and collectibles. Their graphic novel collections counts over 5000 books. Whatever you may be looking for they most likely got it, and if not you can always order and they will get it. In addition the staff is friendly and helpful.

Simmons & Simmons Fine Books

Simmons & Simmons is a used, rare and out out-of-print bookshop. The shop specializes in books on Anthropology and the West, Art and Photography, Children's books, and Needlecrafts. Their collection is quite extensive so you should be able to find something of interest for you at this shop.

New Mexico Tango Academy

New Mexico Tango Academy is the first dance school dedicated to tango in the area. They concentrate on Argentine Tango, that is danced both in Buenos Aires and around the world. The Academy exposes its students to the best national and international teachers. The Academy provides private instruction and hosts workshops. The New Mexico Tango Academy has as a goal to promote Argentine Tango as a way of connecting people to each other.

Serendipity Day School

Serendipity Day School is a nonprofit preschool for children ages 2 to 5. The school provides a stimulating environment for the children, where they are encouraged to make their own choices. Serendipity Day School holds a five star license from the state of New Mexico and a National Early Childhood Program Accreditation.

St. Mark's Montessori School is a preschool for children between 18 months and 6 years of age. The school offers a good learning environment. St. Mark's Montessori School is nonprofit and offers three or four-day programs. The school is working on searching and building on each child's strengths and capabilities.
